British explorer henry worsley dies on antarctica solo trip in 1922
The explorer Henry van der Rohe - known to the public as "H.E." - spent much of the time on Antarctica solo, leaving behind his wife and six children - and never leaving his son and grandson.
Henry van der Rohe, who died in 1982 aged 76, was famous for his expeditions to the north pole and was also known as a "wolf in sheep's clothing", having traveled through several tribes of Indians in the hope of finding a cure for what he believed to be leprosy-induced leprosy.
The last time van der Rohe, whose identity was not well-known until the 20th century, saw Antarctic ice, he was still a child when he saw a polar bear in one of its dens.
According to a report published in The Times in September of 2010, van der Rohe was on board the ship S.S. Polaris on March 27 and spent the first few days searching for polar bears at the site of Salluq Island, but he did not encounter any when he returned to Port Elizabeth.
The report said that while on Salluq, van der Rohe came across something unusual - "lush grasses, as big as trees, growing out of the sea" near the polar ice sheet, which led him to conclude that ice at the area must have been formed before the ice melted.

This is the fifth body the family are dealing with at the moment.
The police had to return the remains to the relatives who were carrying them when they returned to London.
The remains of the six were transferred to a private hospital for treatment.
The couple from Bessbrook, north London, were in charge of a home-made car on Wednesday afternoon, when they decided to drive it over a hedge while driving down a footpath outside their house.
Injured man rushed to hospital, died later. Woman was arrested
The driver had been drinking before the accident.
The first casualty to arrive at St Thomas' Hospital in Bessbrook had been a woman in her 60s, suffering from a broken pelvis and left foot after being struck by debris while working her way along the footpath.
Police were treating her death as a road traffic accident.
The car driver was being treated by paramedics as they arrived on scene.
The body of the woman was being attended to at the private Loughborough hospital. She was being treated for severe head injuries to her chest. The car was found partially submerged. |
